Bearded Dragon Respiratory Infection: Symptoms & Treatment

A respiratory infection is one of the most common — and most serious — illnesses in bearded dragons. It’s usually caused by poor husbandry (too cold or too humid), and it requires prompt veterinary treatment.

This guide covers the symptoms, causes, and treatment of bearded dragon respiratory infections.

What Is a Respiratory Infection?

A respiratory infection (RI) is an infection of the lungs or airways, similar to pneumonia in humans. In bearded dragons, it’s most often caused by bacteria, and it’s frequently triggered by a cold or overly humid enclosure.

Symptoms to Watch For

  • Wheezing, clicking, or crackling sounds when breathing
  • Open-mouth breathing or gasping
  • Bubbles or mucus around the nose or mouth
  • Lethargy and weakness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Spending more time under the heat lamp

What Causes Respiratory Infections?

  • Low temperatures: a too-cool enclosure weakens the immune system.
  • High humidity: bearded dragons need 30–40% humidity; higher levels encourage bacterial growth.
  • Poor ventilation in the enclosure.
  • Stress, which lowers immunity.

Treatment

Respiratory infections need a reptile veterinarian. Treatment typically includes:

  1. Antibiotics prescribed by the vet.
  2. Correcting husbandry: raise the temperature slightly and lower humidity to the 30–40% range.
  3. Supportive care: proper hydration and nutrition.

Don’t try to treat an RI with home remedies alone — untreated respiratory infections can be fatal.

How to Prevent Respiratory Infections

  • Keep the basking spot at 95–110°F and the cool side 75–85°F.
  • Keep humidity at 30–40% (use a hygrometer to monitor).
  • Ensure the enclosure has proper ventilation.
  • Don’t let the enclosure get damp or cold.
