If you’ve noticed dark, oval-shaped marks on your bearded dragon’s belly or chin, you might be worried — but stress marks are not a disease. They’re a sign your dragon is stressed, and the fix is finding and removing the cause.
This guide explains what bearded dragon stress marks are, what causes them, and how to help.
What Are Stress Marks?
Stress marks are dark markings (often oval or line-shaped) that appear on a bearded dragon’s belly and sometimes its chin or throat. They’re a normal color-change response to stress — not an injury or illness by themselves.
Important: baby and juvenile bearded dragons often show stress marks even when they’re perfectly healthy — they’re simply adjusting to a new home. Faint stress marks in a young dragon are usually nothing to worry about.
Common Causes of Stress Marks
- New environment — moving to a new home is stressful.
- Over-handling — too much handling can overwhelm them.
- Wrong temperatures — too hot or too cold.
- Seeing their own reflection or another animal.
- Illness or pain — stress marks plus other symptoms can point to a health problem.
- Cohabitation — being housed with another dragon is a constant source of stress.
How to Reduce Stress Marks
- Give them time — new dragons often settle within a week or two.
- Check temperatures — basking 95–110°F, cool side 75–85°F.
- Add a tank background to reduce reflections.
- Minimize handling until they settle in.
- Never cohabitate bearded dragons.
When Stress Marks Point to Illness
If stress marks are persistent and accompanied by lethargy, loss of appetite, abnormal poop, or weight loss, see a reptile vet — the stress may be from an underlying illness.
