Why Is My Bearded Dragon Sleeping So Much?

Bearded dragons are diurnal — they’re active during the day and sleep at night. So when a dragon starts sleeping a lot during the day, it’s worth figuring out why.

This guide explains why bearded dragons sleep so much and when it’s a concern.

Normal Sleep vs. Too Much Sleep

A healthy bearded dragon sleeps 10–12 hours at night and is active during the day. Sleeping during the day — especially a lot of it — usually means one of the following.

Why Is My Bearded Dragon Sleeping So Much?

1. Brumation (Most Common in Adults)

In cooler months, adult dragons slow down and sleep more as part of brumation. This can last weeks to months and is normal if weight stays stable.

2. Too Cold

A too-cool enclosure makes a dragon sluggish and sleepy.

  • Fix: verify basking 95–110°F and cool side 75–85°F.

3. Poor Lighting / Wrong Day-Night Cycle

If the enclosure is too dark during the day, or lights are left on too long, the sleep cycle is disrupted.

  • Fix: run lights on a timer: 12–14 hours on, 10–12 hours off.

4. Illness

Excessive sleeping plus lethargy, loss of appetite, or abnormal poop can indicate illness — see a reptile vet.

When to See a Vet

  • Sleeping constantly without it being brumation season
  • Weight loss
  • Not eating, sunken eyes, or other symptoms
  • A baby sleeping excessively (babies should be active and hungry)
