Environment: Desert vs. Rainforest
These two couldn’t be more different in habitat needs:
- Bearded dragon: hot, dry, low humidity (30–40%), needs strong UVB and a basking spot.
- Crested gecko: room temperature, higher humidity (60–80%, with daily misting), and does not strictly require UVB.
Diet
- Bearded dragon: fresh salads + live insects daily — more prep work.
- Crested gecko: a complete powdered diet (mixed with water) is the staple, with occasional insects — much simpler and easier to store.
Handling & Personality
- Bearded dragon: calm, slow, and very tolerant — great for relaxed handling.
- Crested gecko: handleable but jumpy and fast, especially at night. Better for short, careful handling sessions.
Which Should You Choose?
- Choose a bearded dragon if: you want a daytime-active, larger, very handleable pet and can manage fresh food prep and a hot, dry setup.
- Choose a crested gecko if: you want a smaller, vertical enclosure and a simpler powdered diet, and don’t mind a nocturnal pet.
Bottom line: both are great — a crested gecko is arguably the easier keeper due to its simple diet and no-UVB setup, while a bearded dragon offers more daytime interaction.
