What to Avoid
- Coil / compact UVB bulbs: they produce weak, uneven UVB and are not adequate for bearded dragons. Use a tube.
- UVB placed over the cool side: put it on the basking side so your dragon gets UVB while basking.
- Glass or plastic between the bulb and your dragon: both block UVB. Mount the tube inside the enclosure or through a screen (mesh blocks some UVB, so account for it).
- Never replacing bulbs: UVB output fades even though the bulb still glows. Replace T5 ~yearly and T8 ~every 6 months.
How to Set Up UVB Correctly
- Mount a T5 tube so it covers about two-thirds of the enclosure, on the basking side.
- Position it so the basking spot is 10–15 inches from the tube (check your bulb’s instructions).
- Place the heat lamp and UVB on the same side — your dragon should get both at once while basking.
- Set a reminder to replace the bulb on schedule.
