Short answer: Bearded dragons can eat kale, but only in small amounts and not as a daily staple.
Why Kale Should Be Limited
Kale is non-toxic, but it contains two compounds that make it a poor daily food for bearded dragons:
- Oxalates: bind to calcium and can contribute to calcium deficiency and metabolic bone disease (MBD) if fed in large amounts.
- Goitrogens: can interfere with thyroid function when fed regularly in large quantities.
This doesn’t mean kale is “poisonous” — it just shouldn’t be the main green in the daily salad.
How to Feed Kale
- Wash the leaves thoroughly.
- Chop into small pieces.
- Offer as a small part of a varied salad, a few times a week at most.
Better Daily Staples
For the base of your dragon’s daily greens, choose lower-oxalate options like:
- Collard greens
- Mustard greens
- Dandelion greens
- Turnip greens
Bottom line: kale is fine as an occasional variety green — just don’t make it the main event.
