Short answer: Bearded dragons can eat spinach, but it should be very limited — it is high in oxalates.
Why Spinach Should Be Limited
Spinach is one of the highest-oxalate leafy greens. Oxalates bind to calcium and prevent your bearded dragon from absorbing it properly. Over time, a diet too heavy in spinach can contribute to metabolic bone disease (MBD), a serious and often fatal condition.
Spinach is not toxic, but it actively works against your dragon’s calcium intake — so it’s best treated as a “rarely” food, not a regular green.
How to Feed Spinach (If at All)
- Wash the leaves thoroughly.
- Offer only a small amount, occasionally — never as a daily staple.
- Always feed it alongside calcium-rich staples, not instead of them.
Better Daily Greens
Use these low-oxalate staples as the base of your dragon’s salad instead:
- Collard greens
- Mustard greens
- Dandelion greens
- Turnip greens
Bottom line: skip the spinach habit — there are much better greens for your bearded dragon.
