Can Bearded Dragons Eat Tomatoes?

Short answer: Bearded dragons can eat tomatoes in very small amounts, but they are not a recommended regular food.

Are Tomatoes Safe for Bearded Dragons?

Tomatoes are non-toxic, but they have two drawbacks for bearded dragons:

  • High acidity: can upset a bearded dragon’s digestive system.
  • Oxalates: bind calcium and can contribute to metabolic bone disease (MBD) if fed too often.

Because of this, most experienced keepers treat tomatoes as an “occasional or skip it” food.

How to Feed Tomatoes (If You Do)

  1. Use only ripe tomato (never green/unripe parts, which are more acidic and potentially harmful).
  2. Remove seeds and cut the flesh into tiny pieces.
  3. Offer a very small amount rarely — not as a regular part of the diet.

Better Choices

For safe, hydrating treats with less risk, choose bell peppers, butternut squash, or zucchini instead.

Bottom line: a tiny bit of tomato now and then is unlikely to hurt, but there are better, safer vegetables for your bearded dragon.
