Bearded Dragon Glass Surfing: Why & How to Stop

If your bearded dragon keeps running back and forth against the glass, scratching at the walls, you’re seeing glass surfing. It’s common, and while it looks frantic, it’s usually a sign of stress or an unmet need — not a medical emergency.

This guide explains why bearded dragons glass surf and how to stop it.

What Is Glass Surfing?

Glass surfing is when a bearded dragon repeatedly runs along the glass, often standing on its hind legs and scratching at the walls, as if trying to “escape.” It’s a stress behavior — your dragon is telling you something is wrong.

Common Causes & Fixes

1. Enclosure Too Small

  • A cramped tank makes a dragon restless. Adults need at least 4x2x2 ft.
  • Fix: upgrade to the proper size.

2. Seeing Its Own Reflection

  • Glass enclosures create reflections that your dragon sees as a rival dragon.
  • Fix: add a background on three sides of the tank, or move decor to break up the reflection.

3. Wrong Temperatures

  • Too hot or too cold makes a dragon uncomfortable and restless.
  • Fix: check the basking spot (95–110°F) and cool side (75–85°F).

4. Stress or New Environment

  • New homes, loud noises, or a visible cat/dog can trigger glass surfing.
  • Fix: give them time to settle, minimize handling, and keep other pets away.

5. Boredom or Wanting Out

  • Some dragons glass surf simply because they want to explore or be handled.
  • Fix: add climbing decor and enrichment, and give supervised out-of-tank time.

6. Hunger or Needing to Poop

  • Sometimes a dragon surfs the glass right before pooping, or when it wants food.
  • Fix: keep a consistent feeding schedule and check for poop.

When to Worry

Glass surfing alone isn’t dangerous, but if it comes with lethargy, not eating, or a black beard, it may point to illness — see a reptile vet.
