Short answer: Yes, bearded dragons can eat bananas — but only as an occasional treat, not a regular part of their diet.
Why Bananas Are Only a Treat
Bananas are safe for bearded dragons, but they have two problems that keep them off the daily menu:
- High sugar: too much sugar can lead to obesity and digestive upset.
- High phosphorus: bananas contain more phosphorus than calcium, and phosphorus binds calcium. Too much can interfere with your dragon’s calcium absorption and contribute to metabolic bone disease (MBD) over time.
How to Feed Bananas to a Bearded Dragon
- Peel it and cut a small piece (about the size of a fingernail).
- Offer only a tiny amount, no more than once or twice a month.
- Remove any uneaten fruit after a few hours.
Better Fruit Alternatives
If you want to give your dragon fruit as a treat, lower-sugar, lower-phosphorus options like blueberries, strawberries, or mango are better choices — and even those should stay under 10% of the diet.
Bottom line: bananas are a fine occasional treat, but they should never be a staple. The bulk of your dragon’s plant food should be dark leafy greens like collard and mustard greens.
