Bathing is a useful part of bearded dragon care — it helps with hydration, shedding, and getting things moving if your dragon is constipated. But it’s important to do it safely.
This guide explains how to bathe a bearded dragon step by step, and how often you should.
Why Bathe a Bearded Dragon?
- Hydration — bearded dragons absorb some water through their vent (cloaca) during a soak.
- Shedding — a warm soak loosens stuck shed.
- Bowel movements — warm water often encourages a constipated dragon to poop.
- Cleaning — helps remove dirt if your dragon gets messy.
How Often to Bathe
- General care: 1–2 times per week.
- During shedding: a few times a week to help loosen shed.
- If constipated: daily warm soaks until they go.
Step-by-Step Bathing Guide
- Choose a clean container — a shallow plastic tub or sink works well (use one dedicated to your reptile).
- Fill with lukewarm water — about 85–95°F (comfortable, like a baby’s bath — never hot).
- Keep the water shallow — only up to your dragon’s shoulders or chest, so it can breathe easily and stand.
- Place your dragon in gently and let it soak for 10–15 minutes.
- Supervise the entire time — never leave a bearded dragon unattended in water.
- Dry gently with a soft towel afterward, and return your dragon to its warm enclosure.
Safety Tips
- Test the temperature with your wrist or a thermometer — too hot burns, too cold chills.
- Never leave them alone — dragons can tire and slip underwater.
- Don’t use soap or shampoo — plain water is all you need.
- If your dragon panics, end the bath early — some dragons simply dislike soaking.
- If the water gets cold or dirty (they often poop in it), drain and refill.
